Tom Kilburn, working at the Electrical Engineering department under Freddie Williams, built the SSEM (Small Scale Experimental Machine: the Manchester guys love naming things). This later grew into the Manchester Mark 1, but the SSEM is accepted by some authorities as the first stored-program digital computer.
